Foreword
Many of us who love music and have chosen to make it part of our professional lives find ourselves enamored of the creative expression of melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. However, we don’t always think about the creative aspects of the business of music which has its own melodies, harmonies, and rhythms. In fact, the business of music is an art form in its own right. One of my favorite quotes from the book (page 46) notes that, “creativity is the lead vocal, business is the harmony, and there is an art to understanding both.”
This groundbreaking work by my friend and colleague, Menzie Pittman, is a journey through the intersection of both of these creative expressions—the music itself and the music business. Through a series of thoughtful conversations with some of the leading musical luminaries of our time, Menzie guides us in how important it is that we embrace our creative spirits in both the music we make and the entrepreneurship required to create a sustainable enterprise as a musician.
This is not a conventional textbook or academic treatise on the music business. There are many good resources for that. Instead, as the direct result of Menzie’s incredible success and reputation in the music industry we have the privilege of hearing from many of the best in the business. From the corridors of record labels to the legendary studios and stages, each conversation offers us a window into the minds of these incredibly successful people who have made music their life’s work. But this book is more than just a collection of interviews. Menzie weaves a rich tapestry of storytelling, shared experiences, and collective wisdom. From the legendary producers to the artists who defy convention, we have a front row seat to the candid reflections and hard-earned lessons of industry titans, and we realize that the business of music is more than just a transactional endeavor; it is the place where passion meets pragmatism, and both require artistic creativity.
I have known Menzie for over ten years, and his passion for music, teaching, mentoring, and moving the business of music forward has been an inspiration to everyone who has had the privilege to know him. In addition to being a musician himself and running an extremely successful music business, he volunteers his time to advocate with government officials to help them understand just how important music education is to the development of the whole person.
As you journey through these pages, prepare to be inspired, challenged, and transformed. Within the anecdotes and revelations lie the keys to unlocking your own creative potential, to reimagining the music business as an incredible opportunity for artistic expression. We learn how the art of contracts, negotiations, and marketing are as important to long-term success to the musician as the music itself.
This book is a friend and companion for every musician, entrepreneur, and industry enthusiast who dares to chart their own course amidst the ever-shifting currents of the music industry. It is a testament to the resilience, ingenuity, and unwavering passion that defines our collective pursuit of musical excellence.
May these conversations ignite your imagination, fuel your ambition, and inspire you to redefine what it means to thrive in the ever-evolving landscape of the music industry.
