It was just before 7 PM on Friday night: the countdown to the\u00a0summer Rock Camp<\/a> Concert had begun.I was so excited, as I\u00a0finally had a two-hour window for my first hot meal of the week.<\/p>\n

The final rehearsal wasn\u2019t until 9 PM, so I thought a break would be\u00a0nice. That\u2019s when the calls came flooding in\u2026<\/p>\n

First, I heard from a friend who called to caution me about a\u00a0tornado warning that was issued for our region. I looked outside\u00a0but where I was, there was no rain \u2013 only funky greenish skies.\u00a0Then the phone rang a second time, and this time it was from\u00a0my\u00a0manager. His opening words ring ominously in my ears still:\u00a0\u201cHey, we have a problem and it\u2019s beyond Code Red.\u201d To an\u00a0owner\u2019s ears those words can mean only three possible things:\u00a0personal injury, fire, or flood. It was, of course, the third.<\/p>\n

Although not a direct hit, the tornado had pulled the stunt of\u00a0choosing to visit and shop for a bit on Main Street on the weekend\u00a0of our biggest event of the year! My manager shared that there\u00a0had been a torrential downpour, and so much rain had fallen so\u00a0quickly that the water management system in the town couldn\u2019t\u00a0process it. Every drain in the town had backed up and our basement\u00a0had severely flooded to the tune of three feet deep in the\u00a0ramp area which translated to four inches deep in the basement\u00a0area of the entire building where we have our Listening Room,\u00a0@4410, and where we were to host our big weekend show in one\u00a0day. Translation: no hot meal tonight.<\/p>\n

My Second Surprise<\/strong><\/p>\n

The second surprise the storm bought was more pleasant than\u00a0the first. By the time I arrived at the store with my shop-vac\u00a0in\u00a0hand, I walked in only to find four other families already there with\u00a0their equipment working on removing the water. Picture this: everyone\u00a0just plugged in and attacking the problem.<\/p>\n

This gave me time to coordinate with the property manager\u00a0and building owner. Fortunate for CMC, I have a close friend and\u00a0customer who so happens to be in the construction business.\u00a0He also generously showed up to help. We were able to get an\u00a0emergency extraction crew there in just over three hours. Working\u00a0tirelessly beside that professional crew for the next five hours,\u00a0the music families, their kids, and our staff all pledged to be ready\u00a0for a 9 AM dress rehearsal. When I left at 2 AM, I walked outside to\u00a0see a town police SUV; they were surveying the various buildings.\u00a0It was truly comforting to know that we were all in this together.\u00a0Thankfully, the extraction crew continued to work throughout\u00a0the night and into the morning. Amazingly, we were ready for the\u00a0dress rehearsal by 9 AM the next morning!<\/p>\n

An Owner\u2019s Reality, and the Truth About Small Business<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the owner, my problems will continue for weeks on end. Disaster\u00a0doesn\u2019t care that my manager and I haven\u2019t had a day off\u00a0for weeks; it does not care that I have to get my daughter back\u00a0to school in Nashville this week or that I have a twelve-week-old,\u00a0cute but needy puppy. Disaster doesn\u2019t care if our biggest event\u00a0happened or not. As a matter of fact, it does not care that we jump\u00a0right into rental season this week with its own unique demands.<\/p>\n

Adding insult to injury, disaster quickly reminded me that we are a\u00a0two-location business by tapping me on the shoulder with a storm\u00a0related, dry wall issue in the other store. Without a doubt, disaster\u00a0shows no considerations! But remember the construction friend\u00a0I referred to earlier\u2026 you already know he\u2019s there for me. He is\u00a0aware that we, as a small business, help his grandson progress with\u00a0his musical interests. Therefore, he is an automatic stakeholder.<\/p>\n

Picture This:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just for a moment picture a former DEA agent on his hands and\u00a0knees shop\u00a0vac-ing\u00a0water for hours on end. Envision the two of us\u00a0at dinner two days later after the show \u2013 the show where his son\u2019s\u00a0band was so incredibly outstanding that they literally brought\u00a0people to tears with their performance. Imagine our discussion\u00a0about his son\u2019s opportunities at Belmont University, and how\u00a0we intend to help him thrive in Nashville. Visualize two brothers\u00a0helping with every detail of clean up, and as they leave late to go\u00a0home, exchange these words: \u201cWe will see you at 9:00 to rehearse\u00a0the final details of the set.\u201d Humorously picture what we refer to\u00a0as \u201cthe second flood:\u201d my daughter\u2019s tears when we discussed the\u00a0possibility of having to cancel the show. I actually stood up better\u00a0against the tornado.<\/p>\n

A Different Way of Thinking<\/strong><\/p>\n

These are the gifts disaster brings us: the gift of the realization\u00a0that we are all in this together. Disaster illuminates the gift of unity.\u00a0Disaster makes us pause, granting us the opportunity to lead. It\u00a0presents a puzzle \u2013 one that allows us to use our leadership skills\u00a0to resolve issues. It makes us take stock of all aspects of our businesses.\u00a0Disaster sheds light on how clever insurance companies\u00a0are by forcing us to review fine policy details, thus sharpening\u00a0our\u00a0legal acumen. Yes, disaster brings many gifts.<\/p>\n

In Closing\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n

Make no mistake. I am completely inconvenienced by this recent\u00a0weather-related event. It will mean weeks with no break. It\u00a0creates extra calls, and extra coordination on top of an already\u00a0overbooked calendar. It adds more stress to an already stressful\u00a0routine. But more importantly, disaster held up a mirror and\u00a0gently reminded me that the worst circumstances bring out the\u00a0best in people, and if you give, you will receive when it is most\u00a0needed \u2013 definitely a good thought to keep in your back pocket.\u00a0I need to mention\u2026 a bit profound, a little ironic but\u00a0also\u00a0timely:\u00a0the last song of the concert was James Taylor\u2019s, \u201cShower the People.\u201d<\/p>\n
